IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS
Idiomatic expressions are the spice of every language, they make it rich, colorful and expressive!!! Here you have some examples:
- A long row to hoe: is a difficult task that takes a long time.
- A picture is worth a thousand words: A picture can often get a message across much better than the best verbal description.
- A pretty penny: If something costs a pretty penny, it is very expensive.
- About as useful as a chocolate teapot: someone or something that is of no practical use.
- After your own heart: is a person that thinks the same as you.
- Mad as a cut snake: someone who is out of control.
- Salad days: are an especially happy period of your life.
At the end one word of warning: Be careful about using the expressions because there is always a literate meaning to it that without nowing the idiomatic meaning doesn't make any sense.

MY NAME IS CLAUDIA
The girl's name Claudia is of latin origin, first mentioned in the 16th century, and it means "lame".
I don't really like this meaning, and it doesn't reflect my personaly either, so, I was looking for something else, and look what I found: It is a variant of the masculine Claude, which in turn has its origin in the Roman Claudius. It comes from a Roman family name which was derived from Latin claudus meaning "Nice, Kind Hearted". This really suits my personality! muahaha!
However it seems that the name Claudia has always been a very popular name as you can see in this graphic.
Despite of that, I haven't met a lot of Claudias yet, maybe they are in other countries. ;)

oral presentation partners! :D
He talked about humor in spanish tv.
Facts I’ve learnt
He talked about different programs in all the Spanish TV; for example, he talked a little bit about “Cruz y Raya” and “Los Morancos” two programs which are showed in tv1.
Cruz y raya: appeared in 1993, and it consisted in different short sketches. They style was sarcastic.
In TVE3, there are a lot of humor programs, but he introduces us to some of them:
“Plats bruts”: It was his favorite series.
“Vinagre”: From his point of view, it is the best program that nowadays are making at tv.
He also talked about “La cosa nostra” a program of Andreu Buenafuente and “Just for laugh” which is a british program.
He also talked about some programs of “telecinco” like: “Camera Café”, “Aida”, “Escenas de Matrimonio”… The most interesting to me is “Camera Cafe”; it consists in some characters who work in an office and in front of a coffee machine they talk and make jokes. I have never seen this program, but it seems quite funny!
He didn’t talk about “antenna3” because he said that he never sees this channel.
He also talked about “Cuatro” and he mentioned “El hormiguero”, “Estas son las noticias”, and “Friends”. I’ve seen “El hormiguero” and “Estas son las noticias” sometimes, but I’ve never seen “Friends”. In his opinion it is a series about a life of some friends, and it’s funny because some of them are silly.
Finally he talked about “La sexta” and particularly about “Family guy” and “Sé lo que hicisteis”. He explained us that “Family guy” is a cartoon series but, of course, not for child, it’s about a weird family, really funny.
Do I have any question?
- Are humor programs your favorite ones?
- Yes, I like a lot of different kinds of programs, but humor programs are the best one.
General impression
He did a good oral presentation, in spite of he didn’t speak fluently.
CHAINEZ SELLUM AND FIONA MATA
They talked about sitcoms.
Sitcom is the name which is given to define a kind of comedy programs which started in the radio, but nowadays we can find sitcoms on television.
There were a lot of sitcoms far away in the history. Nowadays American sitcoms are the most succeful programs.
They showed us the most famous sitcoms, like: “The Cosby Show”, “The Twiligh Zone”… and the most popular for us, “The prince of Bel-Air”, the story about the prince it’s about a street-teenager, the famous Will Smith, who is send to live with his uncle, a really important judge.
They also talked about “American dad” which it’s a satirical animated comedy, from their point of view, really funny.
Ideas for my oral presentation
They talked about a topic which a lot of us didn’t know.
Do I have any question?
- Where do you learn to talk in English like that?
- It’s incredible, but, watching TV.
General impression
Their English is so good, and they have a lot of fluently… they did a really good oral presentation, in spite of that their topic, from my point of view, was a little bit repetitive, but I have to say that all topics of this term were repetitive because all of us, more or less, have talked about the same things, and for me, are not so interesting.
MARINA SARQUELLA
She talked about Pride and Prejudice
Facts I’ve learnt
She talked about three topics very related in the novel: love, reputation, and social class.
About love, she said a really nice sentence: “true love is a force separate from society”
The movie shows a society where reputation it’s so important, normally, more important than love.
Jane Austen, in their books always shows people from very low class, some people think that she is classist, but Marina thinks that she only wants to do a funny comedy, I’m agree.
General impression
She has done a really good oral presentation, the topic was really entertaining and I like it so much, her pronunciation also was good, from my point of view, she has done the best oral presentation in their life, I mean, I have seen a lot of marina’s orals, and I think that this is the best one.
ADRIA ALFARO
Facts I’ve learnt
This series started at 1989 by Matt Groening.
He talked about the main characters:
- Marge and Homer are completely opposite, March is an intelligent woman and Homer is a silly boy. This is the same than Lisa and bart.
- Maggy loves all types of guns, and she is a baby!.
He also talked about other characters of the sitcom, and he did a good interpretation of the film, he showed us that he is always watching the tv at 2’o clock (where “The simpsons” are emitting) muahaha!
He also showed us some curiosities about his series:
In all the states of USA there is a town called Springfield.
The characters of this series have four fingers in each hand, and all of they are yellow.
Explain some curiosities about the topic which I talk about.
Do I have any question?
- Do you are reflected on Bart Simpson?
- No!!
General impression
The topic was funny, and his vocabulary it was so good! I think that he did a good oral presentation.
ARIADNA COMAS
She talked about different kinds literary movements.
Facts I’ve learnt
She talked about :
Neoclacissim, she explained different characteristics of this: the reason is more important than feelings, they don’t use poetry because it expresses feelings…
Romanticism, about this literary movement she said that feelings are more important than the reason, and the idea of liberalism was present there.
It’s completely clear that she’s a letter’s girl! Muahaa!
General impression
She did a good oral, the content of the oral it was really complete, and the structure of the sentences were also good, I think that she worked a lot to made the oral, but the fluency and spontaneity haven’t been present in her oral presentation.
ELISENDA LLADÓ I LAIA SALÓ.
They talked about relationship between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy: developing.
Facts I’ve learnt
They explained the characteristics of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy’s love. They did it between the six most important meetings between them.
They did a good interpretation about the love of the film, and the conclusion was very good:
Elizabeth is the prejudice, and Darcy the pride.
Sure that all of us knew this, but I have never reflected on it!
Do I have any question?
- Which personality you think worse, the pride, or the prejudice?
- We think worse the personality of Elizabeth
- Why?
- Well, because she doesn’t want to know Mr. Darcy only because the things that she hears about him.
General impression
They did a good oral presentation, from my point of view, Laia used better vocabulary, and the structure of her sentences were also quite better, but both were calm and made a typical topic, funny and entertaining. I also want to say, that from my point of view they did a hard work when they interpreted the film.
MARINA JULIÀ AND NEUS PAGÈS
Facts I’ve learnt
They mentioned different kinds of love and related this with couples of the Pride and Prejudice film:
Arranged marriage: Mr. Collins and Charlotte.
Love at first sight: Bingley and Jane
And the nicest love, where hate becomes hard love: Darcy and Elizabeth.
They also talked about “platonic love” and they put a picture of a famous boy (I don’t know his name…) really handsome, who they really love it! I’m sure that it’s true that they are “in love” with him because in one oral presentation of last year they also talked about him!
They introduced humor in the topic with some funny sentences; when they were talking about impossible love, they said: “But don’t worry, because there are a lot of fishes in the sea”
Ideas for my oral presentation
Related the topic with the film, but also with the actually and with some famous people!
Use funny sentences like the sentences which I said before.
They did a good oral presentation! I don’t know what else I can say about them!
He talked about types of humor!
Facts I’ve learnt
He metioned the verbal humor (blue humor, bull, epigram and irony) about physical humor ( Stapstick, clownint, theatres, circus…) and finally about visual humor, he put a lot of very funny pictures!
General impression
He did a really good oral, he didn’t do vocabulary mistakes… and he talked fluently and good. The topic was funny and entertaining, but in my opinion, it was so easy, I mean that he didn’t do a difficult oral comparing with our partners!
But in conclusion, his oral is so good!
Facts I’ve learnt
He explained to us where buenafuente works; he works in TV3 “Casa nostra”, in “Antena3” and “La sexta” he does a program: “Buenafuente”. He is the president of “La sexta”.
He also works in the Radio, in “Cope de Reus”, and in SER. I really was estranged when he said that Buenafuente works in la cope!
Another interesting thing which he said is that Buenafuente also writes books! I don’t know it neither!
General impression
He is really shy, and I think that he was so nervous, but the topic was fine and all the oral too! When he smiles all the oral and the content is better, and clear!
MIRAM FALGÀS AND ANNA GENÍS.
How to be a gentleman like Mr. Darcy in our days?
Facts I’ve learnt
They talked to us about the rules of behavior of high social class:
· Be on time at the date, don’t be late!
· The man has to open the door, and of course, first ladies.
· Don’t eat with the open mouth, and don’t eat big handfuls of food
· Don’t clean the plate with the bread …
Make a “colaish“ in the power point.
General impression
They have done a good oral, the topic was so funny and original, and the power point was also so funny! The only thing which I think that it wasn’t so good was the time; in my opinion their oral was a little bit shorter.
BALDIRI GIRONELLA, BERNARDO SANTOS I IÑAKI FERNANDEZ.
Facts I’ve learnt
They talk about different aspects like, jobs, technology, clothing…
They said that the most important thing in the 19th century was the development of the industrial revolution that began in Great Britain.
When they talked about technology, they said that then, there wasn’t a technology in the houses as electricity, domestic devices, cars… they compare it with the film, saying that in the movie we can see that they have candles to illuminate the house, or they use horses instead of cars.
The education was paying, so only can go to the school the rich people.
Housing: In general the houses were big, with a lot of bedrooms. The poor people normally live in the city, and rich people in the fields, around the cities, in houses with a lot of luxury, gardens…
They talked about food too, in the 19th century, the working class normally eat bread, butter, potatoes and bacon.
The clothes was a aspect which was really influenced by the level of your class. It was really typical that rich men wore hats.
Finally they put a really funny picture and showed us a funny video of “Family dad” to include humor in their oral presentation.
Do I have any question?
- Do you think that nowadays there aren’t difference between poor and rich people?
- Sure, there are a lot of difference but not like then.
General impression
They talked about a lot of things really interesting, but it wasn’t a worked oral.
All of them have a good pronunciation, but Baldiri and Iñaki were talking next to Bernardo, so seemed that their English was poor, and I don’t think so!

MY REASONS FOR THINKING THAT BEING A GIRL IS BETTER THAN BEING A BOY. :D
We can prove this by looking at carnival sessions, playbacks... where boys dress up as a girl, do they want to be like us?
It's true that in old times if somebody published something like my entree, she might have gone to the prision, but fortunatly now the things are changing, but anyway, it's a shame that people continue thinking that women are less important than men.
how can they think this with all the reasons that there are to think the opposite?
